Burlington could soon invest at least $5 million to revamp its waterfront, and nine ideas are vying for a share of the funds.
Cherry Street PromenadeThe idea: Improve the experience for pedestrians and other forms of transportation along Cherry Street from the intersection with Battery Street to the intersection with Church Street, including the use of landscaping and art.
The groups have requested a total of about $17 million in tax increment financing funds, and the five person Public Investment Team will make recommendations to the mayor's office. City Council committees are expected to review a slate of proposals in December to prepare for a Council vote in January and a public vote in March.

Community Sailing CenterThe idea: Construct a 10,000 square foot building for the Community Sailing Center with outdoor storage and boat access at the former Moran Plant site.
Development Group is to create a community aquatic center on Burlington's waterfront that provides an inclusive environment for all to enjoy and learn one of life's most essential skills while fostering community, commerce and promoting economic development."

New MoranThe idea: Redevelop the former Moran Plant building into a mixed use community center with a maker space, glass blowing studio, garden, nano brewery, restaurant, community media studio, event space and more. The plan is led by two University of Vermont seniors, Tad Cooke and Erick Crockenberg.

Burlington Harbor MarinaThe idea: Create 120 new slips, 40 moorings and land storage for up to 64 boats at the Moran site.

The city's request for ideas began in January with 120 initial responses, said Nathan Wildfire, assistant director for economic development at the Community and Economic Development Office. Those ideas were refined throughout the year, and the nine proposals emerged as finalists in October.
