Comparing the gate take of Bay County's Pier Park pier to what could be expected at Grayton Beach is comparing apples to oranges. Is the all around volume of Panama City Beach activities what we want here?
Walton doesn't have a pass to the Gulf of Mexico, but we now have fishing boats leaving from Grayton Beach, shoreline fishing in the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay, and a pass 20 miles away.

Grayton Beach State Park has arguably the most iconic view along County Road 30A, the tall stand of pine trees on the east side of the lake. I'll bet most visitors and residents alike have stopped to look a while or take a photo or two. Although a two story parking lot would not hide that view, it would compete with it, removing that natural vista forever.

I can't imagine that Grayton Beach State Park would be enhanced unless you consider the birds that would scavenge for bait and discarded fish "bird watching" or the sharks that would enjoy the chum "critter watching." In fact, the habitat for watching birds or any other creature in the wild would be diminished. Wildlife and the masses don't mix.

Regardless of whether its parking lot is full every weekend, Grayton Beach State Park is one of the few remaining relatively natural beach spots in Walton County. State parks originally were set aside so future generations could experience and understand the splendor of the way things used to be.

Once it was finished, we frequently went fishing, either in the boat, off a bridge, in a stream, in the bay or from the shore. We had to drive at least 30 miles.
